SAGUENAY-ST. LAWRENCE MARINE PARK
PUBLISHES A SERIES OF EDUCATIONAL ARTICLES

Tadoussac, March 8, 2006 – This week, the Saguenay-St. Lawrence Marine Park begins publishing a series of educational columns for its neighbouring communities. The articles will be published in local weekly newspapers in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean, Charlevoix, North Shore and Lower St. Lawrence regions. English versions will be published in an English-language weekly serving the Quebec City region and will be available on the Park’s Web site at http://www.marinepark.qc.ca/.

Through information on the Park’s history, purpose and partnership approach, the columns promote what has become a unique marine conservation area in Quebec. The columns will also describe how the marine park meets its conservation and presentation goals, encouraging public participation in future development initiatives.

An educational tool

In addition to describing the marine park, the articles provide information on how individuals and neighbouring communities can help conserve the rich natural and cultural heritage of the Saguenay fjord and St. Lawrence estuary. Simple and effective tips on reducing harm to the marine environment by humans complement the educational messages.

The Saguenay-St. Lawrence Marine Park was established in 1998 under a federal-provincial agreement to protect and present the marine environment of a portion of the Saguenay fjord and St. Lawrence estuary. It is the only marine conservation area in Quebec and one of the first in Canada.
