The protected area of the Saguenay–St. Lawrence
Marine Park territory is exclusively aquatic.

It covers 1,245 km2, including a large portion of the St. Lawrence Estuary and nearly the entire Saguenay Fjord.

The terrestrial fringe of the park serves only as an administrative zone known as the coordination area. Protecting and enhancing the marine area calls for the close cooperation of local and regional stakeholders. Their representatives sit on a coordinating committee which ensures that the park is managed in a participatory manner.

The actual territory of the park is subdivided into three entities: the St. Lawrence River estuary, the Saguenay River fjord, and their confluence–the zone where these two masses of water meet.
